Abstract: More than one century ago Alexander Graham Bell discovered the photoacoustic effect that a thin disc emitted sound when exposed to a rapidly interrupted sunlight beam. Photoacoustic spectroscopy has been used as a key technique for chemical analysis in a wide range of applications such as environmental monitoring, industrial process control and medical breath analysis. In this talk, I will overview our recent progress in the development of high sensitivity spectroscopic instruments for optical diagnostics of trace gases. New techniques such as evanescent-wave quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (EW-QEPAS), fiber-laser intracavity photoacoustic spectroscopy (FLI-PAS), and hollow-core fiber photothermal interferometry (HCF-PTI), will be introduced towards a higher sensitivity, smaller size and lower cost.
Resume:Dr. Wei Ren received his B.S. degree from the Department of Precision Instrument at Tsinghua University in 2006 and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 2013. He was awarded the Robert Welch Foundation postdoctoral fellowship to work in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University in 2013. Dr. Ren is now the assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research to date has resulted in more than 40 peer-reviewed journal publications in the fields of laser spectroscopy, optical sensing, and combustion and propulsion.
